Azkals Lost Game vs Mongolia But Still Advances to AFC Challenge Cup in Myanmar

The Philippine Azkals football team advances to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup despite losing their second leg qualifier game against Mongolia, according to international sports sites. The game was played in the Mongolian Football Federation (MFF) Football Centre in Ulan Bator on Tuesday, March 15, 2011.

Mongolia won over the Philippines Azkals, 2-1. Mongolia‘s two goals were delivered in the first half by their skipper, Lumbengarav Donorov and  Garidmagnai Bayasgalan. The Azkals defended well in the second half that prevented the Mongolian team from scoring another goal.

The Azkals still advances to the next round due to a better goal aggregate, 3-2, against the Mongolians.

Phil Younghusband, one of the star player of the Azkals team, suffered a pulled hamstring and failed to finish the game. His brother, James, delivered the first and only goal of the match needed by the Azkals to advance to the next AFC Group Stage match in Myanmar.

Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss admitted that his players were slowed down by the cold weather. He said that the Azkals played under “tough and harsh conditions, minus 10, minus 12 degree [Celsius].”

Below is the tentative schedule of the AzkalsAFC Group Stage matches to be played in Myanmar:

  • March 21 (Mon) – PH vs. Myanmar, 3:30 p.m.,
  • March 23 (Wed) – PH vs. Palestine, 3:30 p.m, and
  • March 25 (Fri) – PH vs. Bangladesh, 6 p.m..
