AVG to Acquire DroidSecurity, Boosts Mobile Offering

Computer Security firm AVG Technologies has announced their acquisition of DroidSecurity, a mobile phone security company specializing in cloud-based protection for smartphones. In their AVG Blog, the Czech-republic based security software vendor announced that the move to acquire DroidSecurity will give their AVG’s Mobile Business Unit a great opportunity to extend its security solution offering to their 110 million consumers worldwide.

AVG Technologies is best known for their free Antivirus product AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, which is very popular worldwide. DroidSecurity is a Tel-Aviv based company and their most popular mobile security application is called “antivirus free” and it constantly ranks as one of the most popular apps for the Android mobile platform in several major download sites.

In the same AVG blog post AVG CEO J.R. Smith says “Our acquisition of DroidSecurity will accelerate the delivery of sophisticated mobile security so that Internet users around the world have the reliable and secure technology they need to securely mitigate the risks associated with mobile device usage.”
Virus Bulletin (VB) magazine also reported that DroidSecurity will become a wholly owned subsidiary of AVG, and will continue to operate from Israel. VB Magazine also reported that DroidSecurity CEO Eran Pfeffer will become the general manager of AVG’s Mobile Solutions Team.

Several news website reported that the acquisition cost AVG some US $4.1 million. As per usual acquisition processes, the completion of the transaction of this deal is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
