Avengers 2: Movie sequel under way after film tops box office in US and worldwide, Disney says

The Avengers movie sequel (Avengers 2) is reportedly now under way, with the film doing well in the box office in the US, where it was shown over a week after it was launched outside the country.

According to Deadline.com on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, Disney CEO Bob Iger has just announced that the film company is now developing a movie sequel for The Avengers, which made $654.8 million until last Sunday, domestically and worldwide combined.

As noted in the report, Mr. Iger noted that the huge success of Avengers movie “is a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much”, adding that there is a very strong demand for Avengers merchandise.

As reported earlier, the Avengers movie, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, made $178.4 million in the box-office on its opening weekend in 38 countries around the world including Philippines, which was released on April 25.

Meanwhile, Disney also announced this Monday that the said movie already made $207.4 million in the US, where it was released last Friday, May 4, and has posted the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time.

The film company noted that the Avengers movie made $80.8 million on its US opening day, followed by $69.5 million on Saturday, and $57 million on Sunday; for a total of $207.4 million in just three days, to be added to the foreign ticket sales that reached $447.4 million until Sunday.

The Avengers‘ movie, directed by Joss Whedon, combined much-loved superheroes of all time, which stars Robert Downey, Jr as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, among others.
