Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) Blue Eagles coach Norman Black predicted it right that his team’s experience will carry them through the UAAP Season 73 Finals. The Blue Eagles routed Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws, 72-49, to take Game 1 of the best-of-three series in the men’s basketball of the 73rd Season of the UAAP.

The Blue Eagles clawed the Tamaraws with their crippling defense and wear down their opponents with their fast-break plays, and an almost perfect offense. Ateneo started like a house on fire by taking an 18-point lead as they end the first quarter at 26-8. The Blue Eagles continued to pile up the points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 21 at halftime with the score pegged at 42-21.

The Blue Eagles had a 49% shooting percentage in the first half while the Tamaraws had a measly 22%. After the first and final deadlock at 2-all, Ateneo raced to a 24-6 advantage and never looked back from there. FEU tried to slow down the pace of the game, but they shot poorly from the floor and the Blue Eagles continued their high-octane offense that spelled doom for the Tamaraws.

The defending champion Blue Eagles dominated both ends of the floor with good defense coupled with their fast-paced offense that gave them 15 fast-break points.

FEU is coached by Glenn Capacio, a former top defensive guard of the PBA.

Buenafe, Frank Golla, Kirk Long, Justin Chua and Emman Monfort started the game for Ateneo, while Cawaling, Reil Cervantes, Pipo Noundou, Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia are FEU‘s starters. Kirk Long was adjudged as the Best Player of the game with 13 points for Ateneo.

Before the game started, the Most Improved Player of the Year award was given to Monfort. Reyes was handed this season’s Jollibee Champ of the Season and PS Bank Maaasahan Player of the Year. –
