MANILA, Philippines – Based on the submitted Statements of Assets and Liabilities (SAL), only one Cabinet member of the Aquino Administration is not a millionaire, according to the reports of several news sites. Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima lead the millionaire’s list and stands as the richest cabinet member of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, while Bro. Armin Luistro is the “poorest” cabinet member, according to their SALs.

Cabinet Secretaries who are lined up for confirmation by the Commission on Appointments (CA) of the Philippine Senate are required to submit their SAL.

Here is the Aquino Administration‘s list of Millionaire Cabinet Secretaries with their declared SAL:
  1. Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, (P243 million),
  2. Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo (P140 million),
  3. Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala (P87.125 million),
  4. Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson (P79.96 million),
  5. Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras (P65.619 million),
  6. Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo (P53.13 million),
  7. Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim (P46.9 million), and,
  8. Transportation and Communication Secretary Jose de Jesus (P44.58 million).

The only Cabinet Secretary who is not a millionaire is Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, former president of De La Salle University (DLSU). He has a net worth of less than P90,000, composed of P79,000 in the bank and personal belongings worth P10,000.

For Luistro, it is a liberating feeling to have only that much money as he is very much satistified with what he has. The P70,000 salary, according to Luistro, is already a big amount.

The Education Secretary, however, is having a hard time getting confirmed in the Senate because Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago has written the CA about her opposition to Luistro‘s confirmation. Santiago has accused Luistro of blocking her to teach in DLSU, when he was still its president. Luistro has denied the accusations of the Senator.
