According to several news sites, Nielsen did some research in the United States and found out that 31 percent of consumers who plan to get a new smartphone indicated that Android was their preferred operating system. This figure is up by 5 percent when compared to the same Nielsen survey done during the period of July 2010 to September 2010.

Apple iOS has dropped slightly in popularity and desirability from 33 percent to 30 percent while RIM Blackberry slid down from 13 percent to 11 percent.

The same Nielsen survey published on Nielsenwire blog also shared the observation that this consumer behavior is already translating into smartphone sales, as fifty percent of those surveyed in March 2011 who indicated they had recently purchased a smartphone in the past six months confirmed they had picked an Android smartphone over iPhone and Blackberry device.
