Amitabh Bachchan, Bollywood’s Superstar to Play Meyer Wolfsheim in Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby”

Amitabh Bachchan, Bollywood’s superstar, will play Meyer Wolfsheim in “The Great Gatsby,” which is directed by Baz Luhrmann. Various entertainment sites are abuzz with the news, September 8, 2011.

Popularly known as the “Big B” in India, Bachchan has starred in more than 180 films, with most of them highly recognized by film critics.

He had won four National Film Awards and was the first Bollywood star to receive the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2000, he was recognized by the Filmfare Award giving body as “Superstar of the Millennium.”

Amitabh Bachchan was also voted in BBC’s online poll as the “Greatest Star of Stage or Screen of the Millennium, defeating many international stars.

His achievements as an actor gained world-wide recognition, not only in Asia with his Lifetime Achievement Award from the Asian Film Awards in 2010, but also in the whole world.

Director Baz Luhrmann told IANS in an email interview that he was “thrilled” the “Big B” was part of the cast. Joining 68 yr.-old Bachchan in the cast are Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan.

Further reports revealed that shooting has started for “The Great Gatsby” with its new superstar, Amitabh Bachchan.
