“Last year, there were two dozen tablets that were on Amazon, and nobody bought them. That’s because they are gadgets, not services. I want our devices to be services and not gadgets. We want to have the best ecosystem of content.” Bezos said during the Amazon announcement, which started around 10:30 PT on Thursday.
“Hardware is a critical part of the service. Absolutely essential. You do need the best Wi-Fi, the very fast processor, graphics engine and gorgeous display. All those things are part of the service. But you can’t stop there.” Bezos added, as he explained the features of the new Kindle e-reader, the Kindle Paperwhite.
As announced by Mr. Bezos, Kindle Paperwhite has 62% more pixels, and a 25% higher contrast, where the blacks are blacker, and the whites are whiter. It also has a built-in front light, which means user can read in bed with the lights turned off since the screen brightness is easily adjusted for reading in any light.
Kindle Paperwhite weighs 212 grams and is thinner than a magazine, and also has an 8-week battery life, even with the light on. The Wi-Fi model costs $119 and the Wi-Fi + 3G version will cost $179. Preorder started that day and will start shipping this coming October 1, with the original Kindle having a price drop and is now only $69.
Meanwhile, the new Kindle Fire HD tablets include a 7-inch model that features HD display with 1280×800 resolution with LTE capabilities, an 8.9-inch model that features 254 pixels per inch with a resolution of 1920×1200, and a 32 GB of storage capacity model that supports a 4G LTE wireless connection.
The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD model costs $199 and will be shipped starting this September 14. The 8.9-inch 16GB model costs $299 and 32GB model will cost $499, while the original Amazon Kindle Fire, now with more RAM and a faster processor, had a price cut from $199 to $159. Both new models will be available this coming November 20.
