Amanda Knox slander trial opened in Perugia, Italy on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, according to reports by several international news sites.

Knox , from Seattle, Washington, was earlier convicted and sentenced to 26 years in prison for murdering and sexual assaulting British roommate Meredith Kercher. She however maintained her innocence of the charges against her.

The proceedings on Tuesday is the result of Knox‘s claims that she was hit by the police during the investigation on Kercher‘s slaying in 2007. Knox said that she was only defending herself and not trying to offend or slander anyone.

After a little discussion on procedural matters, the slander trial was adjourned until November 15, 2011, according to Knox lawyer, Luciano Ghirga. The defendant’s father, Curt Knox, is in court during the opening of the slander trial.

Police filed a slander case against Knox, who said that she was beaten and placed pressure during a police questioning about her involvement on Kercher‘s November 1, 2007, slaying.

Knox‘s appeals trial on her murder conviction will resume on Saturday, May 21.
