As noted at CNN on Thursday night, President Obama and Mitt Romney attended the annual Al Smith dinner, a huge charity gala organized by the Archdiocese of New York, which was held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. Both politicians were invited by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, while Alfred E. Smith IV served as the ‘referee.’
Among those who were also present in that event are New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Ann Romney, who was earlier a guest at ABC‘s ‘The View,’ and some notable press people including Katie Couric, Chris Matthews, Maria Bartiromo of CNBC, and Fox News chief Roger Ailes.
“Let’s just say that some in the media have a certain way of looking at things. When suddenly I pulled ahead in some of the major polls, what was the headline? “Polls Show Obama Leading from Behind.” Romney jokes on his speech, as he spoke first before the president.
“I’ve already seen early reports from tonight’s dinner. Headline: Obama embraced by Catholics, Romney dines with rich people.” Romney added, who learned earlier that the latest national Gallup poll showed that he won, and had 52 percent against Obama‘s 45 percent.
“People seem to be very curious about how to prepare — first refrain from alcohol for 65 years, then get the biggest straw man and mercilessly attack it. Big Bird didn’t even see it coming.” The former Massachusetts governor said further, referring to his comment during the first debate that he would cut funding for public broadcasting to help reduce the deficit.
“This is the third time that Gov. Romney and I have met recently. As some of you may have noticed, I had a lot more energy in our second debate. I felt really well-rested after the nice, long nap I had in the first debate. Everyone please take your seats, or else Clint Eastwood will yell at them.” President Obama jokes.
“I particularly want to apologize to Chris Matthews. Four years ago, I gave him a thrill up his leg; this time around, I gave him a stroke.” Obama added, referring to the earlier rant of Matthews after the first presidential debate, where he lost over Mitt Romney.
“Spoiler alert: We got bin Laden,” The president joked again, offering a preview of his third and final presidential debate with Romney, which will happen on Monday, October 22, to be held at the Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. CBS‘ ‘Face the Nation’ host Bob Schieffer will be the moderator and the topic will be about foreign policy.
