The 2012 AKC Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championship by the American Kennel Club (AKC) will be held at the historic Ames Plantation close to the Grand Junction in Tennessee on Monday, February 27, 2012, as published on AKC official website on Friday, August 12.

Ames Plantation is reportedly rich in bird dogs history with the American Field National Championship being held there since 1915. The Bird Dog Museum located in the Grand Junction exhibits the dog sports history.

In a statement by Doug Ljungren, AKC AVP of Performance Events, he confirmed the venue of the event by saying that they “are very pleased to be running at Ames and feel this event provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the sport’s rich history.” He assured that “Pointing breed enthusiasts will be able to watch great bird dogs and also visit both the Ames Plantation and the Bird Dog Museum to learn more about the history of their sport.”

According to reports, AKC Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championship is considered as the biggest National Championship event that is open to all pointing breeds. The 2012 event, however, will be having only one Championship at stake as the event will follow a modified format aligned with the courses at Ames. For 12 days, a one hour, non-retrieving, two series event will be held at the Plantacion. AKC will only accept a maximum entry of 132 dogs.

Dogs that can qualify in the 2012 event will include those who have earned their AKC Field Championship or Amateur Field Championship title or dogs that have placed in large stakes in 2011. AKC National Gun Dog Championship 2011 stake (Open or Amateur) winners held in Idaho will automatically earn a spot for the 2012 Championship. This will ensure that all dog breeds will be represented.

Notable companies that include Purina (the official dog food sponsor of the AKC Gun Dog Championship), Tri-Tronics, Eukanuba Pet Food, Garmin International, SportDOG, Hardeman and Fayette County Chambers of Commerce, Bank of Fayette County and the Hobart Ames Foundation are some of the major sponsors of the 2012 AKC Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championship.
