The 2013 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play may have lost its luster after PGA Tour‘s top two golfers were eliminated on opening day, Thursday, February 21, 2013 at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana, Arizona.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were both upset in the snow storm-delayed round one of the 2013 WGC-Accenture Match Play.

Shane Lowry of Ireland rallied from 2-down to eliminate World number one golfer, McIlroy. The number one seed conceded the game on the 13th hole. The first round elimination was McIlroy‘s third in the last four years.

Lowry said that “Deep down, I knew I could beat him. There’s a reason I’m here, and this is match play.”

Meanwhile, Woods conceded on the 17th hole against Charles Howell III who played a bogey-free first round.

Howell described his match against Woods, saying,

I had nothing to lose. In this format, match play is crazy. He’s Tiger Woods. I was lucky to hang in there.

Woods said that he and Howell “both played well. He made a couple of more birdies than I did. He played well, and he’s advancing.”

Below is a video of Tiger Woods versus Charles Howell III during the opening round of the 2013 WGC-Accenture Match Play.
