As reported by Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, people familiar with the situation told them that Apple is now working with their component suppliers in Asia to test the 8-inch iPad.

As noted in the report, Apple‘s new tablet computer will have a smaller screen as told to them by unnamed officials at some of Apple‘s suppliers, which are now being qualified to make this 8-inch iPad.

Apparently, the source noted that Apple is working with screen makers including Taiwan-based AU Optronics Co. and LG Display Co. of South Korea to supply the test panels, with the said smaller iPad to have a similar-resolution screen as the 9.7-inch iPad 2.

Meanwhile, a separate report of WSJ suggested that that the next iPad, or iPad 3 will have 4G LTE capabilities, and will be sold at Verizon and AT&T, which is being planned for release in the first week of March.

Last Monday, Rene Ritchie of iMore.com noted that reliable sources told them that Apple will hold their iPad 3 announcement on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, which was also agreed by Jim Dalrymple of “The Loop“.

On that report, iPad 3 will have a 2048×1536 Retina display, will feature a quad-core Apple A6 system-on-a-chip, and possibly to support 4G LTE, the same capability that WSJ is reporting, with the 8-inch iPad being expected to help Apple expand its market share in the increasingly competitive market.
