Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura Co. that owns Sushi Zanmai chain of restaurant in Tokyo, Japan bids on a bluefin tuna for 56.49 million yen or about $736,000 to win the Tsukiji fish market auction, according to reports by several international news sites on Thursday, January 5, 2012.

Reports say that the $736,000 tuna was caught off Oma, in Aomori prefecture near the northeastern part of Japan. The bluefin tuna reportedly weighs around 269 kilograms.

The auction price for the bluefin tuna has broken the record set in 2011 at 32.49 million yen. It also set a record with its translated price of $1,238 per pound.

In an interview, Kimura said that “Japan has been through a lot the last year due to the disaster.” He added that “Japan needs to hang in there. So I tried hard myself and ended up buying the most expensive one.”
