64th Cannes Film Festival Officially Opens, Robert De Niro Heads The Jury To Select The Winners

This year, the 64th Cannes Film Festival (Festival de Cannes) was opened by Bernardo Bertolucci, several international news sites reported today.

“Declaro il Festivale di Cannes aperto. I declare the Festival de Cannes open,” Bertolucci reportedly said in his opening remarks.

Earlier on the same night, Bertolucci was awarded an honorary Palme d’Or d’Honneur by Gilles Jacob for his life’s work which includes The Last Emperor and Last Tango in Paris.

Twenty films will compete for this year’s Palme d’Or award. Robert De Niro is the president of the jury to judge this year’s winners. According to the official website, this year’s jurors include Olivier Assayas, Martina Gusman, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Jude Law, Nansun Shi, Uma Thurman, Johnnie To and Linn Ullmann.

“I don’t know what I’m looking for. It’s not every day you get to see 20 films in such a short space of time. It’s a bit like being on holiday,” De Niro was quoted saying during the press conference.

  • ICHIMEI (HARA-KIRI: DEATH OF A SAMURAI) directed by Takashi MIIKE
  • L’APOLLONIDE – SOUVENIRS DE LA MAISON CLOSE (HOUSE OF TOLERANCE) directed by Bertrand BONELLO
  • LA PIEL QUE HABITO (THE SKIN I LIVE IN) directed by Pedro ALMODÓVAR
  • LA SOURCE DES FEMMES (THE SOURCE) directed by Radu MIHAILEANU
  • LE GAMIN AU VÉLO (THE KID WITH A BIKE) directed by Jean-Pierre et Luc DARDENNE
  • LE HAVRE directed by Aki KAURISMÄKI
  • MELANCHOLIA directed by Lars VON TRIER
  • MICHAEL directed by Markus SCHLEINZER

The 64th Cannes Film Festival runs from May 11 to May 22, 2011. The festival is held annually at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, in the resort town of Cannes, in the south of France.
