Over 61 tons of silver were discovered by the Odyssey Marine Exploration from a shipwreck below the Atlantic ocean. Odyssey announced its findings on Tuesday, July 23, 2013.

The silver bullions were reportedly retrieved from SS Gairsoppa, a 126-meter World War II British cargo ship.

According to reports, the 61 tons of 1,574 silver, out of the total 2,792 ingots, were buried underneath the Atlantic after SS Gairsoppa was torpedoed by a German U-boat in February 1941.

The silver bullion was reportedly worth $630,000 during the sinking of Gairsoppa.

Odyssey Chief Operating Officer Mark Gordon reported that they “have accomplished a world-record recovery at a depth never achieved before.”
