As noted at US news sites that day, Sharon Simmons, a grandmother of two from Carrollton, joined hundreds of hopefuls during the audition for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“I thought about this when I was about 22 years old. I was a single mom, and I wanted to do it.” Simmons told The Dallas Morning News, noting that funds, experience and raising her children delayed that dream for the next 33 years.

“I don’t see a number. If I do, it’s just a number. It’s not that I can’t keep up with [younger women] in the physical part of the training.” The 55-year-old cheerleader aspirant was quoted telling to ABC News last week regarding her age.

“To me, this is just like any other competition. There are steps to take to prepare, which is exactly what I’m doing.” Simmons added, who also authored the book “Triple F: Fifty, Fit and Fabulous” and runs the website Fitnessanyage.com.

Back in February, Sharon, who turns 56 this month, became a talk-of-the-town when she announced that she wants to audition as Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and granted an interview at CBS DFW, explaining her dream.

“I thought, that’s something I never tried. I always wanted to try out. I got real close in my early 20s, but got busy raising my daughter. And I thought, why not now?” Simmons told the paper, who will be the oldest cheerleader in NFL history if she passes the audition.
