Forbes has released its 2011 list of 50 highest paid athletes on Tuesday, May 31 in its official website.

According to Forbes, the combined earnings of this year’s 50 highest paid athletes showed a significant 11 percent drop in figures. The 50 highest-paid athletes has a combined earnings of $1.4 billion or an average of about $28 million.

Forbes clarified that their “earnings figures are derived from salaries, bonuses, prize money, appearance fees, licensing and endorsement income in the 12 months ending May 1. We do not deduct taxes or agents’ fees.”

To be able to make it into the Forbes list of 50 highest paid, athletes should earn a minimum of $18.8 million. In 2010, the minimum earnings requirement is $21 million.

Tiger Woods still leads the list of top athlete earners with $75 million. For the second straight year, tennis player Maria Sharapova is the only woman athlete who was able to make it into the top 50 highest paid athletes. With earnings of $24.2 million, coming largely from her Nike contracts, Sharapova now ranks 29th in the list.
