According to US news sites on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, a sudden burst of fireworks shot into the air above Glorietta Bay at around 8:55 p.m. (local time) that night and it appeared that hundreds of fireworks were set off at the same time; and the explosions lasted for a few seconds.

As noted in reports, around 20 minutes later, people waiting for the display were told to return home and a radio announcement was made saying the fireworks show was canceled, with authorities saying that no one was injured and the incident will be investigated further.

“We sincerely apologize for the technical glitch that affected the #BigBayBoom. Event producers are currently investigating the cause,” Port of San Diego authorities (@portofsandiego) tweeted after the incident, with Big Bay Boom later issuing a statement and apologized.

“Approximately 5 minutes before the show was to start, a signal was sent to the barges that would set the timing for the rest of the show after the introduction. There were a number of preliminary test signals sent hours and minutes leading up to the show.” A statement reads at BigBayBoom.com.

“All these signals tested properly according to Garden State Fireworks, the fireworks company that provides the show. The Garden State Fireworks team will be working throughout the night to determine what technical problem caused the entire show to be launched in about 15 seconds.” Big Bay Boom added.

“We apologize for the brevity of the show and the technical difficulties.” The fireworks organizer said, as some observers rushed to social networking sites such as Twitter and voice out their disappointments, and posted photos and videos as well.
