According to a press release at EPSRC.ac.uk on Monday, July 4, 2011, British scientists have recently developed a 3D chocolate printer which will allow users to create personalized chocolates.

“What makes this technology special is that users will be able to design and make their own products.” Dr. Liang Hao was quoted on the report, who led the research at the University of Exeter, in UK.

“In the long term it could be developed to help consumers create custom-design products from different materials.” Dr. Hao added, noting that they started with chocolate due to its easy availability, low cost and being non-hazardous.

As noted on the report, the project was funded as part of the Research Council UK Cross-Research Council Programme – Digital Economy and is being managed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The creation of 3D chocolate printer was led by the University of Exeter in collaboration with the University of Brunel and software developer Delcam.

“This is an imaginative application of two developing technologies and a good example of how creative research can be applied to create new manufacturing and retail ideas.” EPSRC Chief Executive Professor Dave Delpy reportedly said.
