Joey Chestnut and Sonya Thomas won the 2012 Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest on Thursday, July 4, 2012, as part of the July 4th holiday, which was held at the company’s flagship restaurant in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York.

As featured at ESPN3 live via online that day, the women’s competition went on first, which started at around 11:30 a.m. ET, and Sonya Thomas ate 45 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. The mens’ division followed 30 minutes later, with Joey Chestnut eating 68 hot dogs and buns also in 10 minutes and eventually won.
Thomas, 44, also called ‘The Black Widow‘, successfully defended her title and broke her own record of eating 41 hot dogs during the first Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest for Women held last year. Juliet Lee of Germantown, Maryland, won as second place with 33 hot dogs, who also won as second last year after eating 29 ½ hot dogs.
On the other hand, Chestnut, 28, tied with his previous world record which he claimed last year, and has already won for six straight years since 2007 and is now tied with the previous legendary winner, Takeru Kobayashi, who held the title from 2001 to 2006.
Meanwhile, Chestnut and Thomas won $10,000 each while second placers Lee and Tim “Eater X” Janus, who ate 52 hot dogs, claim $5,000 each. Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti, whose last record was 53, came in third with 51.
