According to an article at AutoSport.com on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, the new IndyCar chassis to be called IndyCar Safety Cell, was designed by Italian racing car company Dallara, with the help of Wheldon.

“We will honor his memory for the years to come by dedicating the Dallara IndyCar 2012 in his name. He deserves that.” Dallara Chairman Gianpaolo Dallara was quoted on the report.

Dan lives in the memory of everybody at Dallara. All people at Dallara always enjoyed meeting him in Italy and in the USA.” Dallara added, noting that naming the car after him is such great way to honor to his name.

The late Dan Wheldon, who was only 33 when the incident happened, is the Indianapolis 500 champion in 2005 and 2011, and had 16 career victories in the IZOD IndyCar Series.

As of this writing, the codename of the new car has not yet been confirmed but there were suggestions particularly from IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe, who suggested naming it ‘DW 001‘.

“I’ll think about Dan every time I’m fortunate enough to sit in the car he helped develop. I’d love to see Dallara name the chassis DW 001.” Hinchcliffe (@Hinchtown) tweeted on Monday.

Meanwhile, a website called DanWheldonMemorial.com was also created in the memory of Dan Wheldon with some photos of the late car racer in it and links to additional information about him.

“His infectious smile, bubbly personality and big heart made Dan one of the most caring people I had ever met. You could never ask for a better ambassador to a sport.” IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard wrote on the website.

Dan represented IndyCar with the utmost respect and integrity. Dan will not only be immortalized as being a great racer but also a wonderful person.” Bernard added.
