According to US news sites that day, the announcement for the 2012 Car of the Year and the Truck of the Year was made on the first day of the annual North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

“The award is important because it is not yet the case that the Hyundai is the default choice,” Hyundai America chief executive John Krafcik was quoted on reports, noting that over 200,000 Elantras were already sold since it was introduced.

“This is a nice feeling for the brand.” Krafcik added, with Hyundai Elantra beating two other finalists, the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Passat for the Car of the Year award.

The Hyundai Elantra, which was designed at the car company’s California studio, was noted for its low price and for being a high efficiency compact car that gets 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

On the other hand, the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque won the Truck of the Year award, which was also named the SUV of the Year 2012 by Motor Trend magazine during its annual event last October.

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque, which is a small sport-utility vehicle with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, beat two other similar-sized finalists, the BMW X3 and the Honda CR-V.

The vehicle also claims a 20-percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared with larger engines with the same power output, equipped with seven airbags, a knee airbag for the driver; among others.

The awards were noted to be made by a group of independent automotive journalists from US and Canada representing magazines, television, radio, newspapers and websites, which do not accept advertising from automakers.

Meanwhile, among the new cars introduced at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show includes the 2013 Dodge Dart, the 2013 Ford Fusion, and the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid, as well as the Volkswagen E-Bugster concept car.
