As noted at US news sites that day, President Obama and his family attended the 89th annual Lighting of the National Christmas Tree in Washington, marking the start of the Christmas season this year in the US.

US First Lady Michelle Obama was also present and was joined by Kermit the Frog in reading “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Marian Robinson, her mother, as well as the First Daughters were also there.

“No matter who we are, or where we come from, or how we worship, it’s a message that can unite all of us on this holiday season,” President Obama said on his speech, with the 2011 National Christmas tree lighting event being by Carson Daly.

“But we all know that this tradition is much larger than any single tree. And tonight we gather here again, not simply to light some decorations, but to honor a story that lights the world.” The president added.

The 26-foot Colorado blue spruce Christmas tree was planted in March on the Ellipse, near the White House, with the previous tree, being destroyed by a wind storm last February.

The 2011 National Christmas tree lighting also featured performances from Big Time Rush, English singer Ellie Goulding, pop band OneRepublic, country singer Rodney Atkins, and Marsha Ambrosius, among others.
