According to US news sites, the 96th annual Nathan’s hot dog eating competition on Coney Island in New York will be televised live on ESPN on Monday.

The Nathan’s hot dog eating competition was held for the first time in 1916 and has been held every July 4th of the year except for two years, with ESPN airing it live since 2004.

The women’s competition will start at 11:30 a.m (NY time) while the men’s competition will start around 30 minutes later, with the usual prize of $20,000 now to be $10,000 for each winner.

Sonya Thomas of Atlantic City, who weighs around 105 pounds, is the current holder for the women’s world record when she ate 41 hot dogs during the 2009 competition, and will join again this year.

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, from San Jose, California, who holds the world record for eating 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes which he earned in 2009, won last year and ate 54 hot dogs.

Chestnut, 27, a four-time world champion, was said to be this year’s favorite for the men’s competition, as his closest rival Japanese Takeru Kobayashi will not be joining again.

Kobayashi, 33, also known as “The Tsunami“, won the Nathan’s hot dog eating competition for six consecutive years since 2001 but lost to Chestnut in 2007.

On June, 2010, Kobayashi announced he will not compete for that year’s contest due to an alleged dispute with the Major League Eating officials but attended the event as part of the audience.

When the contest ended, Kobayashi reportedly slipped up the stage stairs and later crashed the stage; and he was banned to join the contest since then.
