Tea party candidate Ted Cruz won against the Republican favorite Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in Texas‘ runoff election on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, international news sites reported that day. Cruz captured the GOP nomination to replace the retiring U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
According to reports, Dewhurst called Cruz to concede. “We are witnessing a great awakening. Millions of Texans, millions of Americans are rising up to reclaim our country, to defend liberty and to restore the Constitution,” Cruz reportedly told his supporters in Houston.
“We got beat up a little bit but we never gave up. We came up a little short this evening, which is something I’m not used to, being short. But we will never stop fighting for our beloved Texas,” Dewhurst was quoted as telling a small crowd in another part of Houston.
More than 1 million Texans participated in the runoff election, reports said.
