Rare Titanic photos and letters acquired from the descendants of Titanic survivors John and Nelle Pillsbury Snyder are due to be sold by Philip Weiss Auctions on October 21, 2011 in New York, as noted from their official website.

According to Philip Weiss Auctions website, the highlights of this rare collection includes a letter of Mr. John Synder to the proprietor of a London tobacco shop written on Titanic stationary dated April 10, 1912 which was said to be two days before the sinking of the ship. Original family photos of the Synder’s which were taken the day they disembarked the rescue ship Carpathia on April 18, 1912. A letter of Mr. Synder to his father containing a moving first hand account of the sinking, which tells how the rows of portholes ‘disappeared one by one’.

“We were almost the very first people placed in the Lifeboat. Only a very few people were on deck at the time and they thought it much safer to stay on the big boat than to try the life boat”. He goes on to say how once in the life boats they could see from afar the boat sinking. ” Finally the bow went under- that the finest boat in the world was doomed- we hit between 11:40 & 11:50 and the Titanic sunk at 2:22 in the morning,” Mr. John Synder said as he was quoted from his letter.

The rare Titanic collection also includes original photos taken from the deck of the Carpathia, four photos of the ocean; one with an ice field in the distance, another with small pieces of ice floating, one with a relatively large size iceberg in the distance and another of the open sea. There are also photos showing passengers in lifeboats heading towards the Carpathia.

Here are some of the photos being sold by Philip Weiss Auctions with Lot #334 and are expected to fetch around $50,000 to $70,000.
