Pop diva Mariah Carey is now confirmed to be joining ‘American Idol‘ as one of its judges, more than a week after Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez announced that they will not return to the show next season. The 42-year old “Hero” singer was immediately welcomed by show host Ryan Seacrest.

As noted at entertainment news sites on Monday, July 23, 2012, Fox Broadcasting announced during the Television Critics Association press tour that day that Mariah Carey is now among the new American Idol panel of judges, joining Randy Jackson as the only remaining original judge.
“Mariah Carey is the real deal. Not only is she one of the best-selling artists and performers on the planet and one of the world’s most gifted vocalists, she also is a successful songwriter, record producer and actress,” Mike Darnell, president of alternative entertainment at Fox, was quoted in a statement.
“She has a deep knowledge of music and a career insight that will make her a really amazing asset to our judges’ table and to our contestants. It’s the dream of almost everyone who auditions for ‘Idol‘ to sing like Mariah and we couldn’t be happier to have her be part of the show.” Darnell added.
“It’s gonna be so much fun working on @AmericanIdol. As a singer-songwriter, I’m excited to help find and nurture new talent. LYM!” Mariah Carey (@MariahCarey) tweeted after the announcement; adding that she now working on her new album and its first single, ‘Triumphant‘, which will be out early next month.
“Welcome to the fam @MariahCarey!! When u and @nickcannon need a date night, I’m happy to strap on the double baby bjorn.” Ryan Seacrest (@RyanSeacrest) tweeted, with Nick Cannon earlier joking that hiring her wife as among the American Idol judges could be “expensive”.
