As noted at E! News, Maria Sharapova had a news conference at the US Open 2012 that day after she beat American tennis player Mallory Burdette, 6-1, 6-1. She was then asked by a reporter about her quiet love life, and did not hesitate to reveal that she and Vujacic decided to split several months ago.
“It’s been since the end of spring. I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question. I have never really been the person to announce things. I never announced when we were together or never announced we were engaged. I never have in any of my previous relationships, as well.” Sharapova reportedly said.
“It was a really nice period of time for both of us, but our career schedules just made it extremely difficult to see each other with the traveling and especially his career move to Turkey. But we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. I still would love to call him as a friend.” Sharapova added.
Sharapova, 25, who earlier announced that she was forced to withdraw from two summer hard-court tournaments, Montreal and Cincinnati due to stomach pain and that doctors told her she needs to rest, also beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino, 6-0, 6-1 last Wednesday night, which made her advanced to the third round.
Vujacic, 28, who now plays for a professional basketball team in Istanbul, Turkey, reportedly proposed marriage to Sharapova back in October 2010, with an engagement ring valued at $250,000. Sharapova won over Hungarian Melinda Czink last Monday, and will face fellow Russian player Nadia Petrova this Sunday, September 2.
