Manila, Philippines – President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III (PNoy) on Friday, August 31, 2012 appointed Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Mar Roxas as the new Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary, replacing Jesse Robredo, who died after his plane crashed on August 18, 2012.

President Noynoy Aquino announced during a short press conference in Malacanang Palace on Friday at around 1:30 p.m. (local time) that Mar Roxas is the new DILG chief, while Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Abaya is now the new DOTC secretary, replacing Roxas‘ place.
Roxas, 55, was the vice presidential running mate of PNoy in the 2010 election but lost to now Vice President Jejomar Binay. He also won as senator in 2004 and garnered 19 million votes, the highest ever garnered by a national candidate in any Philippine election.
Meanwhile, PNoy emphasized on his speech that he appointed Roxas, who was supposed to run for president in 2010 but gave way for him, because he knows that he can do the job, and that his appointment as the new DILG secretary is not a political move in preparation for the 2013 and 2016 elections.
“Napakalaki, napakalawak, napakaselan at napakabigat ng responsibilidad ng pagiging DILG secretary. More than this, I have big shoes or tsinelas to fill. Hindi po ako si Jessie Robredo. Marami pa po akong kakulangan,” Roxas was quoted as saying during the press conference.
(Being a DILG secretary is a very big, broad, sensitive and a heavy responsibility. More than this, I have big shoes or slippers to fill. I am not Jessie Robredo. I have a lot of deficiencies.)
Secretary Roxas, who previously headed the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) during the administration of former Presidents Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, added that he will continue the leadership principles of Robredo, which include transparency, accountability, and people empowerment.
Mar Roxas is the president of the ruling Liberal Party (LP), while Abaya, who also said in his speech that he will continue the policies started by Roxas, is the secretary-general, and President Noynoy Aquino is the party chairman.
