According to Telegraph that day, the incident took place at around 9:55 a.m. (local time) and Anna Skora was near the St John’s Catholic Primary School on the A226 in Gravesend in Kent, when the teenager suddenly emerged from the crowds and tried to snatch the torch from her.
“We have arrested a 17 year-old man following an incident as the Olympic torch passed through Gravesend. The man, who is from Gravesend, was arrested within seconds and he is now in custody of Kent Police.” A Kent Police spokeswoman was quoted in the report.
As noted at Daily Mail, the teenager shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’, Arabic for ‘God is Great’ as he attempted to snatch the Olympic torch but failed. Ms Skora managed to keep the torch, as members of the Torch Security Team grabbed him and put him into the ground on the side of the street.
Apparently, the attempted grabbing of the Olympic torch was seen in live TV broadcast via BBC, with Skora, who was then about to pass the torch to Graham White, a Surrey charity worker, was seen as keeping her composure and continued to smile despite the incident.
Meanwhile, the Olympic torch is being expected to reach Tower of London at around 8pm (local time), which will be later carried by 982 torchbearers around 200 miles of the capital’s streets, with the final day of the Relay to be on Friday, July 27, the day of the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.
