As shown in the video below, Beasley was about to make a drive for a basket when Bynum headed his right elbow landing on the chest of the Timberwolves player in mid air, who dropped on the floor of the Staples Center.
There was a slight commotion and after a short meeting with officials and referees, Andrew Bynum was ejected from the game with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The incident occurred on the fourth quarter io the game with only about 6 minutes remaining, and the Lakers still won, 103-96.
“He [Bynum] was going to go block the shot and he knew he was too late and so he just bumped him; he just gave up on the block but he didn’t try for the block,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson told reports on Friday. “But, Andrew’s [foul] looked bad and the kid fell hard.”
“I know Andrew; he wasn’t going up to do anything malicious. He was just going to protect the basket.” Timberwolves head coach Kurt Rambis said, also on Friday, who used to be the assistant coach of LA Lakers.
“So I think he was making a good basketball play out of it. Those [flagrant fouls] are judgment calls by the referees. Unfortunately, Michael got hurt on it.” Rambis added.
On Sunday, March 20, ESPN reported that NBA decided to give Andrew Bynum a two-game suspension without pay, for that hard foul on Michael Beasley.
Bynum was not seen on the Los Angeles Lakers vs Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday at the Staples Center in LA, where the Lakers won; 84-80. He will not also play in the game on Tuesday against Phoenix Suns.
