Japan was hit by a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake causing a tsunami that washed away cars along the coastline, several international news sites reported today.
Japanese television showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away by tsunami. Officials reported that the wave could be as high as 10 meters and numerous casualties are feared.
According to reports, the earthquake struck at about 400 kilometers from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles.
Seismologists say that it is one of the largest earthquakes to hit Japan in many years. A tsunami warning was issued to the Philippines, Indonesia, Guam, Taiwan, Hawaii and the Pacific coast of Russia. (Update: List of Philippine provinces with tsunami warning.)
