iPad 2 Revealed: Price, Release Date, Specifications, Photos

SAN FRANCISCO – Though Apple CEO Steve Jobs is currently on medical leave, he showed up at the Apple Event where he unveiled the second-generation of the iPad.

“We’ve been working on this product for a while and I didn’t want to miss it,” Jobs said.

According to Jobs, the iPad 2 has a faster processor than the original iPad‘s.

“It’s dramatically faster. It has a new chip called A5. It’s dual-core, so we get twice as fast performance on the cpu and nine times better graphics performance.”

iPad 2 comes with two cameras for taking photos and video chatting. It also comes in two colors – black and white.  The battery life will be the same as the original, but it will be 33 percent thinner — 8.8 millimeters instead of the current 13.4 millimeters.

iPad 2 will cost the same as the first generation iPad starting at $499, and it will be available with data plans from AT&T and Verizon.

iPad 2 will be available in 16, 32, and 64 GB versions, wireless and non-wireless beginning on March 11 in the United States, and March 25 to 26 to more countries like Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Replublic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Ireland, Hungary, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and UK.

Steve Jobs also introduced Smart Covers which can work side-by-side with iPad. The iPad Smart Cover falls perfectly into place and stays put to protect the iPad screen. It wakes the iPad when you open it. Close it and your iPad goes to sleep automatically.

It comes in 10 bright colors — including five in rich, aniline-dyed Italian leather. The polyurethane cases cost $39 and the leather cases cost $69.
