HP’s TouchPad enters “tablet war” in US on July 1: Apple’s iPad vs. webOS tablet

Hewlett-Packard will be entering the race for dominance in the tablet market come July 1 in the United States with the arrival of its TouchPad which will be pitted against Apple‘s iPad, as reported by several news sites, June 9, 2011.

Reports also claim that HP’s TouchPad enters the market as a new potential threat for iPad’s dominance. It was noted that some of the tablets already offered in the market are Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, Motorola’s Xoom and BlackBerry’s PlayBook.

Reports reveal that the 9.7-inch, 1.6 pound TouchPad tablet will sport a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, and a 1.3 megapixel camera.

John Robinstein, senior vice president and general manager of HP was reportedly quoted saying, “What makes HP TouchPad a compelling alternative to competing products is webOS… The platform’s unmatched features and flexibility will continue to differentiate HP products from the rest of the market for both personal and professional use. This is only the beginning of what HP‘s scale can do with webOS.”

Apparently, Mike Howard, a DRAM and memory analyst, further cited, “The iPad, which has single-handedly dominated the tablet business since its introduction last year, will account for the bulk of the DRAM (dynamic random access memory) demand in the market in 2011 and the following years.”

“However, competition to the iPad is seeping into the market, driving further DRAM demand,” he adds.
