Mendel, or Gregor Johann Mendel, was born on July 20, 1822 in Heinzendorf bei Odrau, Austria Silesia (now Hyncice, Czech Pepublic), and was called the “father of modern genetics”.
He passed away in 1884 at the age of 61 but it was only in the early 20th century that scientists realized the importance of his experiments about inheritance using peas, which later was known as Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance.
After Mendel has completed his work with peas, he used honeybees in his next experiment to study further the heredity to animals, but failed to produce a clear result due to the difficulties in controlling mating behaviors of queen bees.
Meanwhile, Google Doodle now welcomes users by replacing the Google logo with peas to remind everyone of George Mendel’s 189th birthday anniversary.
Once Google users click the logo, they are being led to articles pertaining to George Mendel and his works, which Google usually does to celebrate the life of important people in history.
