Spanish surgeons, headed by Dr. Pedro Cavadas, said Monday that they recently completed the world’s first double-leg transplant at La Fe Hospital in Valencia, Spain, giving an accident victim two new legs, as reported by various international news sites, July 11, 2011.

Related reports reveal that the surgeons began the operation Sunday night and spent nearly 14 hours connecting bones, nerves and muscles. Dr. Pedro Cavadas, the lead surgeon and hailed in Spain as the “miracle doctor”, had previously carried out the first double arm transplant and face transplant in Spain.

Experts reportedly confirmed that it will take a month at least before the team will know if the procedure was a success. The still-unidentified patient lost both legs above the knee in an accident and that previous attempt to fit him with two artificial legs failed.

Spanish media reports further claim that Health Minister Leire Pajin telephoned Cavadas to congratulate him on the “success” of the latest operation. The surgery “brings hope to other patients who have suffered amputations,” the minister said.

She also praised the “generosity” of the donor’s family who had helped “make our country an example of solidarity in the world.”
