According to Fox 40 News on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, David Messa said that he was on his second night of camping in that area last May 19, when he was surprised to see the rare wolverine running near a small lake in the Tahoe National Forest.
“Quite a pleasure to see something like that. You know, the first day, I actually saw a bald eagle. I thought, well, is the trip gonna get any better than this?” Messa was quoted telling to Fox 40 News, showing the photo of the rare mammal to the news reporter.
“He was like a bull in a China shop running across that lake. He just probably feared nothing. He was kind of galloping; actually fell through the snow two or three times, turned around and came back, and came across in front of me.” Messa added, noting that he was sure it was a wolverine.
Apparently, this was said to be only the fourth time that a live wolverine was spotted in California and photographed, and the last one was in 2008 taken by a motion sensor camera in the Tahoe National Forest.
Meanwhile, Messa noted that wildlife biologists with Fish and Game and the Department of Forestry have already verified his photo and confirmed that what he saw is a real rare California wolverine.
