Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, has recently shifted his focus from technology dominance to philanthropy efforts that include providing vaccines for children in poor countries around the world.
During a pledging conference on Monday, June 13, 2011 in London, GAVI was able to raise about $4.3 billion. Other notable donors who had given their pledge include British Prime Minister David Cameron with $1.3 billion and Australia with $211 million.
According to Gates, the $4.3 billion raised during the GAVI conference “is absolutely human generosity at its finest.” He added that this will be the “first time in history, children in developing countries will receive the same vaccines against diarrhea and pneumonia as children in rich countries.”
GAVI was founded by Bill Gates and the alliance includes the Gates Foundation, World Health Organization, UNICEF, major vaccine makers and others
Reports say that global alliance has already provided vaccines to 288 million children in 19 countries. The objective of GAVI is to provide 243 million additional vaccines by 2015 to 26 other countries
