Dozens of Afghans are feared dead after an estimated 5.4 and 5.7 magnitude earthquakes hit the mountainous northern Afghanistan on Monday, June 11, 2012.
According to reports from international news sites, the earthquakes brought a slide of rocks and mud down, affecting Baghlan province the most.
Abdul Majid, Baghlan‘s governor reportedly said that 22 homes were buried and more bodies are still unrecovered.
“The village has been buried in the landslide. We believe that between 50 to 100 people have died. We can’t give an exact number now. Things will be clearer by late evening,” Majid was quoted as saying.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 5.7-magnitude quake hit the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan and was also felt in parts of Tajikistan.
