August 20, 2010 – A second Iowa egg farm has ordered a major recall of eggs in an effort to stem the outbreak of salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, or arthritis.

It has been reported that Hillandale Farms, in New Hampton, Iowa, issued a recall of 170 million eggs that could be contaminated with salmonella — bringing the total number to more than half a billion.

Eggs affected by this latest recall are distributed under the following brand names: Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms, and Sunny Meadow in 6-egg cartons, dozen-egg cartons, 18-egg cartons, 30-egg package, and 5-dozen cases. Loose eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Wholesome Farms and West Creek in 15 and 30-dozen tray packs. The loose eggs may also be repackaged by customers.

Eggs involved in this related recall are only eggs with the following plant numbers:
P1860 – Julian (production) numbers ranging from 099 to 230
P1663 – Julian (production) numbers ranging from 137 to 230

On August 13, Wright County Egg voluntarily conducted a nationwide recall of shell eggs on 3 of its 5 farms. And earlier this week, they expanded its recall to 380 million eggs, which federal public health officials believed may be linked to 1,000 or more salmonella infection cases nationwide.

Consumers who believe they may have recalled eggs should return them to the store for a full refund, said the company.
