As featured at ABC that day, Scottish car race driver Dario Franchitti was declared the 2012 Indy 500 winner, with his first winning was in 2007 and the second time was in 2010, but missing the 2008 Indy 500 to pursue a NASCAR career.
Apparently, Japanese driver Takuma Sato was seen trying pass Franchitti at Turn 1 of the last lap of the race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but failed as his car went spinning and was sent to the outside wall and crashed; eventually landing him on the 17th spot.
“It was a crazy race. I had a good car and was able to time the passes.” Franchitti was quoted telling reporters after he won, and delighted the crowd by pouring the traditional bottle of milk over his head, with Judd calling the win “such an extraordinary achievement” and that she is proud of him.
Franchitti, 39, later wore the trademark white sunglasses of Wheldon, who passed away in October 2011 at the age of 33, after being injured during a collision during the 2011 IZOD IndyCar World Championship, after winning the 2011 Indy 500 in May that year.
“Everybody up there was a friend of Dan‘s, and that about sums it up. Everybody loved him,” Franchitti said, adding that Susie Behm, Wheldon‘s widow, was also present in the audience, with 2008 Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon landing as second and Tony Kanaan on the third spot.
